Advantages and applications of optical bonding

Optical bonding is the use of an optical-grade adhesive (such as silicone gel, epoxy or urethane)to glue a glass to the top surface of a display. The main goal of optical bonding is to improve the display performance under outdoor environments.

TFT LCD display are susceptible to glare and reflection from direct sunlight or high-bright applications. In almost all TFT LCDs there is an air gap between the TFT panel and the cover lens.

When a normal display is used in an outdoor environment, there are some factors that affect its readability. The most common one is “fog”, or condensation, which forms on the inner surface of display’s vandal shield. Another factor is the reflection of sunlight, which causes a mirror-image on the display. Both phenomena can be solved by using optical bonding.This method eliminates the air gap between the cover glass and the display and to increase the display’s contrast ratio by reducing the amount of reflected ambient light.

Optical bonding is the preferred option for project applications where the highest levels of durability, optical clarity, and reflectivity are required, such as military, marine, medical, transportation and retail sectors.

Key benefits:

* Increased ruggedness
* Improved durability
*Condensation
*Extended temperature range and EMI filtering
*Reduced reflections
*Improved contrast ratio
*Sunlight readability
*Zero contamination (dust or dirt)
*Improved heat dissipation (heat can dissipate through the front glass)

Applications:

*Military
*Transportation
*Outdoor Product
*EV Chargers
*Medical
*Automotive
*Instrumentation

The market share of optical adhesives is expected to grow to 30% by 2025. The main reasons for this growth are the ever-increasing demand for high durability displays in public view applications and the continued miniaturisation of devices which necessitates better optical clarity.
