Mobile Phone Screen — The Difference Between LCD Display & OLED Display

Regarding , we often hear about bangs, full-screen, waterfall screen and so on. In fact, these are just forms of screen presentation. At the end of the day, the two main types of mobile phone screens commonly found on the market are LCD screens and OLED screens. For example, Apple released the new iPhone 11 series last month, of which the iPhone 11 uses an LCD screen, while the iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max use OLED screens.

There are also two voices about these two screens, some users feel that the OLED screen is better and others feel that the LCD screen is better. So what is the difference between these two screens? How should we choose when buying a phone? The following professor will talk about it.

What is the definition of an LCD screen and an OLED screen?

An LCD screen is commonly known as an LCD monitor and is relatively common and usually found in homes. It does not have self-luminous characteristics and requires backlight support. These backlights can only emit white light, and to project the three primary colours, a layer of colour filter is needed to apply the colour.

The OLED screen is an organic self-luminous material with its own luminous properties. When an electric current is passed through it, these organic materials become self-luminous, projecting light in the three primary colours of red, green and blue. Especially when displaying a black interface, the screen and the phone’s black panel almost blend into one. In more detail, OLED screens are divided into AMOLED screens and Surper AMOLED screens.

01 Imaging effects

The LCD has a backlight layer, which refracts light to emit light, so the colour saturation is not as high and the display effect is more natural. Accordingly, LCD screens are less fatiguing to watch for long periods of time and are more eye friendly.

OLEDs are self-illuminating, with each pixel projecting the three primary colours of red, green and blue, resulting in a more vibrant and fuller display. However, OLED screens are also prone to screen burn-in as they do not guarantee that each sub-pixel will emit the same amount of light.

02 Screen thickness

LCD screens are thicker and non-bendable, which means that phones with these screens have larger bezels, such as the iPhone 11, while OLED screens are thinner and bendable.

As mobile phones become more and more full-screen, major mobile phone manufacturers are increasing the screen-to-body ratio of mobile phones, hoping to hide more components under the screen, such as screen fingerprints, under-screen cameras, etc. The thinness and bendability of OLED screens are in line with the development needs of full-screen, so more and more mobile phones are now using OLED screens.

03 Price

LCD screens have been developed for a long time now and the technology is already very mature and the cost is low compared to OLED screens.

04 Service life

LCD screens are made of inorganic materials, while OLED screens are made of organic materials, which age faster. Therefore, LCD screens have an advantage in terms of service life.

Summary

When comparing LCD and OLED screens, we can see that both have their own strengths and weaknesses and are not perfect. If the OLED screen is a player with unlimited potential, then the LCD screen is also a stable player, so you can choose according to your preference when buying. It is very unscientific to judge a phone by whether it has an OLED screen or not!
